AI has been making its mark in the healthcare sector, helping medical professionals in early detection of diseases and powering medical technology. An IIT graduate has reportedly built an AI-based patient monitoring system that sends out health alerts in case of hospital staff shortages.

IIT Indore graduate Gaurav Parchani’s startup reportedly utilises a sensor attached to a patient’s bed in hospitals, which continuously conducts tests on the patient and depicts the test data on a monitor nearby. The same data is also reflected at the nursing station. If the patient’s vitals go beyond the normal range, the sensor sends out an alert to the hospital staff. The sensor attached to the bed can detect blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate. This new AI-based sensor technology has reportedly been installed in 300 hospitals in India thus far.

India Among Top 3 APAC Targets for AI-Based Cybercrime, Ransomware Attacks

While AI has proved its merit in a number of different fields, the emerging technology also comes with its risks. Aside from privacy and copyright issues, AI poses a security threat. The technology can be used to create misleading content and perpetuate cybercrimes and scams. India has reportedly emerged among the top three most targeted nations in the APAC region, as AI technology has helped cybercriminals to create more efficient and faster ransomware.

According to Microsoft’s Digital Defense report, the company blocked an average of 4,000 password attacks per second targeting its cloud infrastructure. While AI-based attacks have increased, the technology is also helping in warding off cyberattacks.

EU, Japan Converge on AI

The European Union reportedly sees “convergence” with Japan over generative artificial intelligence. The European Commission has been leading the charge on AI regulation, especially with its AI Act, that seeks to govern the emerging technology. Japan, however, is reportedly looking at greater engagement with emerging tech like AI to help boost its economy.

“I see a lot of convergence in how we look at AI and generative AI,” European Commission Vice-President for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova reportedly reportedly said on the sidelines of a forum on internet governance in Kyoto on Monday.

Microsoft Could Launch Its AI Chip Next Month

Microsoft is all in on AI and the tech giant is an early backer of ChatGPT maker OpenAI. The company has also released its own AI services like the Bing AI chatbot, and integrated AI-powered features with its suite of existing products. Now, the company could reportedly be set to unveil its own AI chip at its annual conference next month.

The AI sector depends on advanced AI chips that power and train AI models, thus creating a dependence on chip firms like Nvidia. Microsoft intends to make its own chips to reduce that dependence. Microsoft’s chip is reportedly meant for data centres, where it can help run large language models that power generative AI chatbots.

AI ‘Top Investment Priority’ for CEOs,’ Says KPMG Survey

AI has attracted a flood of investment since OpenAI’s generative AI chatbot ChatGPT exploded in popularity. Big tech has raced to invest in AI startups. Microsoft has backed OpenAI, while Google has invested in AI firm Anthropic. Amazon, too, recently invested $4 billion in Anthropic. A KMPG survey claims that AI is now a top investment priority for CEOs.

Over two thirds of US CEOs reportedly think that generative AI is an investment priority for their firms. Four hundred US CEOs took part in the survey. Sixty-two percent of the surveyed CEOs said that they expect to see returns on their investment in three to five years, while 23 percent expect quicker returns in one to three years. Japanese investment firm SoftBank has also been exploring investment opportunities in the sector, with the company also possibly looking at backing OpenAI. Meanwhile Meta, too, has rolled out its suite of AI services across its platforms recently, including Meta AI, a generative AI assistant.
