Apple is planning a $1,000 tabletop robot equipped with a movable iPad-like screen, that aims to be a versatile home assistant.
Apple is working towards releasing a tabletop robotic device with a potential launch aimed for 2026. Bloomberg reports the device is expected to cost around $1,000, this device aims to function as a versatile home assistant.
The upcoming device will be equipped with a large display akin to an iPad, supported by a slim robotic arm. The arm will allow the screen to tilt, vertically adjust, and rotate fully. Designed to be a smart home command center, it will also facilitate FaceTime calls and act as a home security monitor.
Integrating with Siri and other Apple smart technologies, the robot will respond to voice commands and recognize different household members. The display will automatically orient itself towards the speaking individual, aiming to enhance user experience and act as the central node for home automation.
The project is managed by Kevin Lynch, Apple’s vice president of technology. Lynch has overseen major projects such as the Apple Watch and was involved in the self-driving car effort. Known internally as J595, the robot project has seen accelerated development since getting approved in 2022, with several hundred employees now focused on it.
Apple’s robot initiative is part of broader efforts by Apple in robotics and artificial intelligence. The company is also investigating home-use mobile robots, AirPods featuring built-in cameras, and a large foldable iPad. Additionally, there are plans for developing smart glasses and AR technologies.
Earlier this year, Apple terminated its electric car project after a decade, reassigning many team members to its AI endeavors. The shift followed concerns from top executives about the project’s financial viability and high investment demands.
Apple remains committed to integrating generative AI across its products, although these features won’t be included in the initial releases of new software for iPhones and iPads. On an earnings call on August 1, CEO Tim Cook mentioned that Apple is exploring ChatGPT-like experiences for the iPhone, Mac, and iPad. Cook emphasized that Apple Intelligence will be a substantial motivator for users to upgrade their devices.
