Apple may let iPhone users control apps with Siri in iOS 18 | – Times of India

Apple is planning to make Siri a lot smarter by using artificial intelligence (AI). The new Siri will be able to control apps on your iPhone or iPad just by using your voice, according to a report from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg.

Sources tell Gurman that to make this happen, Apple had to rebuild the way Siri works using its own large language model codenamed Ajax.

With the new underlying AI model, iPhone users be able to ask Siri to do things like open a specific document, move a note from one folder to another, send or delete an email, open a particular news story, and even summarise an article for themselves.

At first, this new Siri will only work with Apple’s own apps and will be limited in what it can do, suggests Gurman. Over time, Apple plans to make Siri capable of handling hundreds of different commands.

Apple is expected to announce the new generative AI-powered Siri at its annual developer conference called WWDC on June 10, but it might not be available for everyone to use until next year as part of an update to iOS 18.

So, until the improvements come aboard, Apple could benefit from its reported OpenAI deal, under which the company will be juicing up Siri with ChatGPT, so it would be better and more natural at conversations.

While some people are worried about privacy with AI, Apple has again and again said that user security and privacy are first and foremost concern for it. The company plans to reassure customers by using its Secure Enclave technology in the data centres and providing an “intelligence report” that explains how user information is secured.
