With its AI Mission to establish’sovereign AI’ and assist startups, India is preparing for a major leap in artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
The program targets a compute capacity of 10,000 to 30,000 graphic processing units (GPUs) through PPP and an additional 1,000-2,000 GPUs through the PSU Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). It also involves building capacity within the government.
According to Indian Express, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, has emphasized the necessity for Cabinet approval and looked into a number of private company incentive schemes. The objective is to build a digital public infrastructure (DPI) that targets industries like education, healthcare, and agriculture and enables startups to obtain computational capacity at a lower cost.
Apart from enhancing computational capabilities, the government also hopes to make datasets available to Indian businesses. To further support the nation’s AI ecosystem, the government is also thinking about enacting regulations requiring big tech companies to share anonymized personal data with the India Datasets platform.
