Microsoft has announced a partnership with Inworld to develop two tools powered by generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for game creators: an “AI design copilot” and an “AI character runtime engine”. The first tool will help game creators explore new ideas and the second tool will help them implement GenAI in games.

The AI design copilot will turn “prompts into detailed scripts, dialogue trees, quests and more,” which “assists and empowers game designers to explore more creative ideas.” It could also help them cut down development time and cost. You can think of this tool as similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT which can give you ideas on a topic.

The AI character runtime engine, on the other hand, “can be integrated into the game client” to enable “entirely new narratives with dynamically-generated stories, quests, and dialogue for players to experience.” Basically, with this tool, a game can adapt to the player’s actions and choices in real time to make the gameplay more interesting.

More details coming on November 17

Microsoft will offer these tools as an option for developers to create games for any platform. According to the company, it will collaborate and innovate with Xbox and third-party studios for the development of these tools. Inworld says that it will reveal more details about the two tools at the G-Star Korea event on November 17, 2023.

The two companies say that these tools will use “Inworld’s expertise in working with generative AI models for character development” and “Microsoft’s cutting-edge cloud-based AI solutions including Azure OpenAI Service, Microsoft Research’s technical insights into the future of play, and Team Xbox’s strengths”. According to them, this partnership will help in “revolutionizing accessible and responsible creator tools for all developers.”
