Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest telecommunications company, has entered into an exclusive multi-million-dollar agreement with Eutelsat OneWeb to enhance the island’s satellite connectivity. The partnership, announced today, is set to integrate Eutelsat OneWeb’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services into Chunghwa Telecom’s existing communication services portfolio.

The collaboration between the two companies aims to establish a robust multi-orbit satellite service offering by combining Eutelsat OneWeb’s LEO capabilities with Chunghwa Telecom’s Geostationary Orbit (GEO) services. This integration is expected to improve the resilience of Taiwan’s communication infrastructure by complementing its terrestrial networks, submarine cables, and microwave communication services.

Alex Chien, Executive Vice President of Chunghwa Telecom, led the delegation to London for the signing of the agreement. During the event, he highlighted the strategic importance of this alliance in providing essential tools for communication that will benefit both the Taiwanese government and businesses.

Eutelsat OneWeb boasts a constellation of over 600 LEO satellites designed to provide fast and low-latency communication services. Stephen Beynon, co-General Manager of Eutelsat OneWeb, expressed his excitement about partnering with Chunghwa Telecom to further their mission of delivering high-speed connectivity across the globe.

In 2022, Chunghwa Telecom underwent significant organizational changes that integrated business groups and technical teams. As part of their ongoing strategy, they plan to continue forming partnerships both domestically and internationally. A key initiative includes establishing a satellite service terminal testing center in Taiwan in collaboration with Eutelsat OneWeb to offer technical expertise and integrate satellite service resources.

Eutelsat Group, which emerged from the combination of Eutelsat and OneWeb in 2023, serves various sectors including video, mobile connectivity, fixed connectivity, and government services. The group is dedicated to providing safe and sustainable connectivity solutions aimed at bridging the digital divide.

Chunghwa Telecom’s strategy emphasizes “transformation × 5G × sustainability,” with a strong commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. The company is also exploring emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), fostering international collaborations to promote globalization and rapidly developing customer-centric solutions and services.
