Telco worker in ‘position of responsibility’ charged after allegedly defrauding employer of $3m

A Sydney telco worker will face court today accused of defrauding his employer of $3 million through allegedly stolen phones. Police allege the man unlawfully obtained 1500 high-end mobile phones and sold them online. The 34-year-old man was arrested on November 9 after police executed a search warrant at a home in Guildford, in the city’s west. The man was taken to Granville Police Station, where he was charged with fraud, dealing with the proceeds of crime and unauthorised modification of data. Police will allege in court the man was employed in a “position of responsibility” within the company. It was through this position police will allege he unlawfully obtained the mobile phones and accessories and sold them for cash on various marketplace websites. He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court today.
